Reverse Phone Directory

We all know what a phone directory is, so this leaves us with the question: “What changes if we add <> in front of that phone directory?”; the answer is simple: leaves us with the reverse phone directory which is also known as greypages directory. This type of phone directory is a gathering of phone numbers and associated owner details such as the normal phone directory, the only difference is that in the phone directory we have all the details of the service customers (name, address, phone number) on view, unlike the reverse phone number directory where the only detail at sight we can use is the telephone number and we search the rest of the details by that telephone number, calling the service. These type of reverse phone directory are often used by law enforcement and other forms of emergency services although there are public reverse phone directories as well.

In some countries the publicly accessible phone directories may be provided as part of the standard directory services from the telecommunications carrier. In other countries the service is “provided” by phone phreakers (phone hackers) who collect the information available in the publicly accessible phone directories and then create their own network of reverse phone directories wich allows users to search people’s details by their phone number.

In the United States of America the reverse phone directories have been printed by the phone companies for decades, and were distributed to the law enforcement, public libraries and telephone companies. The business industry manages to take this service in their advantage by the early 90’s, starting to offer reverse phone directories for fees and by the early 2000’s the advertising-based reverse phone directories came out on the internet, with occasional prompts about privacy concerns.

The landline phone subscribers can pay a small fee to exclude their number from the directory. This service is usually called “Your Listing Not Published” and cost ranges between $0.80-$1.50 for residential customers and that is nearly nothing for someone who needs his privacy.

In the United Kingdom the reverse phone directories are not publicly available, however in the Channel Islands it is provided in the printed telephone directories.

In general, cell phone are not listed in the reverse phone lookup but related search on the internet reveals that this service is also functioning. Many sites claim that can gain access to cell phone database and can run reverse searches on these numbers also. Business numbers are also included in this database and you can access the information of any business trying to reach you. The information that a reverse phone number search can provide you can also help you in your business. Many firms currently use this service to track down people who are behind in payments. Others use this service as a call back method for calls they missed. It is a simple and useful tool that can be used at anytime on the Internet.

Bottom line is that this useful service should be introduced to every country of the world and to protect the privacy of one just to simply give the possibility of exclude themselves from such listings.
